EASTER SEALS ONTARIO – Chief Executive Officer

Easter Seals Ontario provides programs and services to children and youth with physical disabilities across Ontario to help them achieve greater independence, accessibility and integration.

For the past 93 years, Easter Seals has played an important role in providing support for children and youth with physical disabilities. Thanks to our generous donors, we continue to offer programs that allow kids to experience freedom, independence and a sense of accomplishment. For families, Easter Seals is somewhere to turn for help when they need it.

Easter Seals is a registered charitable organization that helps children and youth with physical disabilities from all ethnic and religious backgrounds. We assist families with the purchase of costly mobility equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, porch lifts and ramps, as well as communication devices, toileting aids and bathing equipment. Easter Seals also helps by providing summer camp opportunities at our two properties, Camp Merrywood and Camp Woodeden. Easter Seals also offers post-secondary scholarships and provides access to information and resources, and public education and awareness.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The immediate mandate of the CEO is to lead the growth revenue strategy of the organization through effective leadership of the Fundraising portfolio.   The incumbent directs and oversees the execution of long range strategies concerning organization-wide fundraising strategies.  The incumbent will require the ability to represent the organization to a wide variety of constituencies that will significantly enhance support for Easter Seals Ontario among public sector funder, foundations, and high-net-worth individuals and businesses.  The CEO will have the drive, maturity, entrepreneurial spirit and communication skills required to take on the task of securing the financial health of the organization into the future, and must gain the respect of a broad constituency both internally and externally.

 

As President & CEO, you will provide vision, direction and inspiration to a strong executive team and to a provincial organization of staff and volunteers, raise the profile of Easter Seals in Ontario, not only in name, but also by promoting a better understanding of the scope and reach of the organization in communities across the province. Be a visible and vocal advocate of Easter Seals’ work and enhance the organization’s credibility by demonstrating the unique and innovative ways that Easter Seals makes a difference in the lives of children and youth with disabilities. Work closely with National and provincial colleagues as well as private sector funders to ensure strong and effective partnerships in the goal of helping clients lead full and independent lives.


KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES

1.The President & Chief Executive Officer of Easter Seals Ontario reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. In program development and administration, the President & CEO will have the following accountability:

In Organizational Leadership and Fundraising Strategy, The President & CEO will:

1.Ensure the highest caliber of fundraising professionals are in place to craft the strategy, mobilize the right resources (staff, board, volunteer and community) and achieve the goals in support of Easter Seals’ vision.

2.Ensure that the organization has an overall long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.

3.Provide leadership in support of the fundraising, program, organizational and financial plans. With the Board of Directors and staff, carry out plans and policies authorized by the board.

4.Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization’s work and especially in the growth and effective management of revenues.

5.Maintain an active and working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.

In National, Provincial, and Other Partnerships, the President & CEO will:

1.Represent Easter Seals and advocate for achievement of the goals and vision of the organization as a leader in Ontario and within the context of current and potential partnerships.

2.Ensure that Easter Seals’ role as the provincial charity in this field is well understood and garner the support of others toward Easter Seals’ unique role.

3.Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with provincial legislation and community agencies and government offices requirements.

4.Jointly, with the Chair and as Secretary of the board of directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.

In Communications, the President & CEO will:

1.See that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.

2.Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.

3.Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations.

4.Represent the programs and point of view of the organization to agencies, organizations and the general public.

In Staff Relations, the President & CEO will:

1.Be responsible for the development of and effective organizational structure and the recruitment and retention of the highest caliber of staff and volunteers to achieve the vision.

2.Ensure that roles and accountabilities are well understood and clear expectations set. Ensure an effective employee performance management program.

3.See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place.

4.Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, within available resources, and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total mission of the organization.

5.Maintain a climate which attracts keeps and motivates a diverse, highly skilled staff.

In Budget and Finance, the President & CEO will:

1.Be responsible for developing and maintain sound financial practices.

2.Work with the staff, the Audit Committee, and the board in preparing the annual budget, monitor that the organization operates within budget guidelines.

3.Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

This dynamic and exciting role will appeal to an experienced leader who understands how to mobilize an organization and its supporters to achieve success. The successful candidate will possess:
  • Proven fundraising and development experience with major donors, annual appeals special events, and direct mail.  Ability to cultivate and organize senior level executives, donors and community leaders.
  • Demonstrated success in raising funds, including building institutional assets.  Experience in donor-advised, general and endowment fundraising required.  Proven track record of professional accomplishments and resource mobilization.
  • Proven people and process management experience in a fast paced, team oriented, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills developing and cultivating partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
  • A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive fundraising & marketing experience, with at least 5 years of senior management experience.
  • Graduate degree, or equivalent experience.
  • CFRE Designation desired, membership in AFP an asset.
  • Strong written and oral communications a must.

  • Solid and progressive experience in strategy development and implementation
